1She walks in beauty, like the night

2Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

3And all that's best of dark and bright

4Meet in her aspect and her eyes;

5Thus mellowed to that tender light

6Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

7One shade the more, one ray the less,

8Had half impaired the nameless grace

9Which waves in every raven tress,

10Or softly lightens o'er her face;

11Where thoughts serenely sweet express,

12How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

13And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,

14So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

15The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

16But tell of days in goodness spent,

17A mind at peace with all below,

18A heart whose love is innocent!

About She Walks in Beauty

Byron drafted this in June 1814, the morning after an evening party where he saw Anne Beatrix Wilmot, his cousin by marriage, wearing a black spangled mourning dress — the seed of "dark and bright" meeting in one figure. It appeared in 1815 in Hebrew Melodies, a set of lyrics written to accompany synagogue melodies, and it is built like one: three six-line stanzas of iambic tetrameter rhymed ABABAB, short enough to sing.

The stanzas move steadily inward. The first is pure appearance — the woman's beauty compared to a cloudless, starry night, "all that's best of dark and bright" balanced so finely that "one shade the more, one ray the less" would impair it. The second locates that balance as a "nameless grace" in the face, where thoughts show their "dwelling-place." The third completes the turn: the smiles and tints on cheek and brow are read as evidence of a life "in goodness spent" — beauty as the visible sign of an innocent mind.
