Poetic form
What is free verse?
Definition
Poetry without regular meter or rhyme, shaped instead by line breaks and breath.
Free verse drops the metronome but keeps the music. Instead of counted beats and end-rhymes, it builds rhythm from sentence shapes, repetition, and — its sharpest tool — the line break, which controls pace and emphasis like a held breath.
Walt Whitman cracked the form open in 1855; by the twentieth century it had become poetry's default. The freedom is real but demanding: with no external rules, every choice has to be earned.
Structure of free verse
- No fixed meter or rhyme scheme
- Line breaks create emphasis: the last word of a line gets free spotlight
- Repetition and parallel phrasing supply the rhythm
- Stanzas act like paragraphs of feeling
How to write free verse
- Write your thought as prose first, honestly and plainly.
- Break the lines where you'd breathe, then re-break them where the meaning turns.
- Read aloud; move any word that stumbles.
- Cut every word that exists only to explain another word.
