John Clare

English poet · 1793–1864

I Am!

John Clare, an agricultural laborer with almost no formal schooling, wrote some of the finest nature poetry in English — and after fame abandoned him, spent his last decades in an asylum, where he wrote his masterpiece "I Am!"

That poem, about holding onto selfhood when everything else is gone, has become a touchstone for readers facing isolation of any kind.
