The Spot by the Door
There's a worn place on the floorboards
where you waited every day,
sure — completely, dog-heartedly sure —
that I'd come back.
Now I'm the one at the door, old friend,
learning your hardest trick:
the waiting,
without knowing how long.
But you taught me how it's done —
all faith, no clock.
Good dog. Good dog.
