2Angels sang the hymn of the end;

3Purple winds went moaning,

4Their wings drip-dripping

5With blood

6That fell upon the earth.

7It, groaning thing,

8Turned black and sank.

9Then from the far caverns

10Of dead sins

11Came monsters, livid with desire.

12They fought,

13Wrangled over the world,

14A morsel.

15But of all sadness this was sad —

16A woman's arms tried to shield

17The head of a sleeping man

18From the jaws of the final beast.
