7STROPHE View the wither’d Beldam’s face;

8 Can thy keen inspection trace

9Aught of Humanity’s sweet, melting grace?

10 Note that eye, ’tis rheum o’erflows;

11 Pity’s flood there never rose,

12 See these hands ne’er stretched to save,

13 Hands that took, but never gave:

14 Keeper of Mammon’s iron chest,

15 Lo, there she goes, unpitied and unblest,

16She goes, but not to realms of everlasting rest!

18 (A while forbear, ye torturing fiends;)

19Seest thou whose step, unwilling, hither bends?

20No fallen angel, hurl’d from upper skies;

21 ’Tis thy trusty quondam Mate,

23 She, tardy, hell-ward plies.
